On August 8, the first two meetings were held in the Third Main Committee of the X NPT Review Conference, which specializes in the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes. During the meetings, statements were made by 48 States, as well as 4 coalitions and the EU.

The first week of the X NPT Review Conference was held in New York, during which 9 plenary meetings were held, as well as two meetings in the first committee.

On August 3, the 5th and 6th plenary meetings were held within X NPT Review Conference. During the meetings, 43 states intervened with their statements, as well as the Stockholm Initiative coalition, represented by Sweden. Amid the calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, the state parties also expressed their readiness for joint efforts to adopt the final document of the Review Conference and the desire to prevent the failure of the 2015 Conference.

The UN General Assembly First Committee (GA1) is one of the primary platforms for deliberations on nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament issues. It considers all disarmament and international security matters within the scope of the UN Charter or relating to the powers and functions of any other organ of the United Nations. From 4 October to 4 November 2021, the 76th Session of the UN GA First Committee on Disarmament and International Security took place. By observing the results of the Committee’s work, we can have more insight into the activeness of states in nonproliferation field, the distribution of power and influence among different states, and general support of UN Member States to different nonproliferation issues.
The NPT has been the most important international security treaty for more than 50 years. This affirmation is undisputed by its member-states. What state will speak up against nuclear nonproliferation, cessation of nuclear arms race, and peaceful uses of nuclear energy? But the devil is in the detail. And the conference tasked with reviewing the implementation of the treaty is being prepared in no easy circumstances.
