PIR PRESS - "Today it is clear that the more anti-missile plans of the United States of America will be developed, the more problems will arise in the Russian Federation in terms of national security", - Deputy Minister of Defense of Russia, member of SuPR and PIR Center's Advisory Board Anatoly Antonov.

On March 30, 2011 the spring meeting of the Trialogue Club International was held, which was addressed by Anatoly I. Antonov, Deputy Minister of Defense of Russia, member of SuPR and PIR Center's Advisory Board.

Anatoly Antonov spoke about the prospects of Russian-US relations in the military-political sphere, focusing on the process of implementing the new START treaty, on the possibilities of cooperation between the two countries in the establishment of the European segment of the U.S. missile defense system.

Having indicated major issues in Russian-US relations in the military-political field at the present stage - the question of the relationship between strategic offensive and defensive weapons, the possibility of placing weapons in outer space and the existing imbalance in conventional weapons - Anatoly Antonov, however, noted that it was developments in the field of missile defense that in the near future "will be the litmus test to show the real willingness of each party for an effective equal partnership".

p6364_2.jpgAccording to the Deputy Minister, "today it is clear that the more anti-missile plans of the United States of America will be developed, the more problems will arise in the Russian Federation in terms of national security".

Expressing the idea that Russia is not less than others interested in the security of the European continent, Anatoly Antonov, at the same time, noted that "underestimating European states' impact on the development of missile defense system in Europe would be wrong. That is why we are holding a series of bilateral consultations with European countries trying to explain what we want and what we do not want".

One part of the speech was devoted to the current relations between Russia and NATO member states. "It is clear, that the United States are playing a leading role in the North Atlantic Alliance, in the definition of the defensive doctrine of NATO. And this happens regardless of whether we like it or not - it is a fact of life. Correspondingly, the Russian-American relations in the military-political field, of course, also affect Russia's relations with NATO member states", - noted Anatoly Antonov.
