PIR PRESS – «It stands to reason that without cooperation with the USA and achievement of new agreements on security and arms control issues Russia would not be able to build the system of European security, prevent possible armed conflicts of post-soviet space and counter extremism and terrorism with due efficiency”,  – Evgeny Buzhinsky, Lieutenant-General, Head of the International Treaty Directorate of the Main Department of International Military Cooperation of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation (2002-2009), PIR Center Advisory Board Member.

On December 6-7, 2011 in Washington D.C. PIR Center together with Ploughshares Fund held regular meeting of Sustainable Partnership with Russia (SuPR) Group on the “Future of the Russian-US Strategic Dialogue: Beyond Deterrence – Building a Sustainable Agenda”. The meetings were held on the basis of the Russian Cultural Centre and the Russian Embassy in the USA.

The participants agreed on the fact that 2012 will be anything but simple for US-Russian relations. “The year of 2012 is not the best time for a breakthrough in US-Russian relations in security area especially for anti-missile defense issues - first and foremost because it is hard to expect from the US President demonstration of political will on sensitive issues of national security in the year of presidential elections”, – stated participants of the SuPR meeting. p6971_2.jpg

In the meantime, according to Lieutenant-General, Head of the International Treaty Directorate of the Main Department of International Military Cooperation of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation (2002-2009), PIR Center Advisory Board Member Evgeny Buzhinsky, “it stands to reason that without cooperation with the USA and achievement of new agreements on security and arms control issues Russia would not be able to build the system of European security, prevent possible armed conflicts of post-soviet space and counter extremism and terrorism with due efficiency”.

At the meeting presentations were also made by Assistant Secretary of State Rose Gottemoeller, Special Assistant to the President and White House Coordinator for Arms Control and Weapons of Mass destruction, Proliferation and Terrorism Gary Samore, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia in the USA Sergey Kislyak. The SuPR members also held a briefing with top US experts on international security issues and bilateral relations.

p6971_3.jpgDuring the meeting the participants pointed a number of promising directions where development should be intensified. These include cooperation in the field of cyber security, nuclear issues, development of economic cooperation. Following the results of the meeting expert recommendations will be prepared and sent to top decision makers in Russia and the USA.

SuPR was established on April 8, 2010 in the day when the new START treaty was signed. The main goal of the Group is to contribute to establishment of stable and long-term partnership between the Russian Federation and the USA on crucial issues of international security. Previous SuPR meeting took place on February 2-3, 2011 inGstaad, Switzerland.
