MOSCOW, JULY 4, 2013, PIR PRESS – “It goes without saying, that we stand for the political processes in Egypt to develop in the legitimate political way, and for us the President of Egypt, Mohamed Morsi, is legitimately elected president. We cooperated with him and hopefully will continue the cooperation. At the same time we understand the mood, which is expressed by a large part of the Egyptian society. Also we do understand this feeling of responsibility that the military of Egypt have for the fate of their country”, – Mikhail Margelov, Chair of the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly and Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation on the cooperation with African countries.

On July 4, 2013 Trialogue Club International meeting on “The Arc of Instability across the Middle East and the Sahel: Russia's Approaches” took place in Moscow. Mikhail Margelov, Chair of the Committee for Foreign Affairs, Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly and Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation on the cooperation with African countries gave the keynote speech.

Special Representative of the President was to focus on the processes, taking place in Sahel region, but the rapidly changing situation in the Middle East made its adjustments. On July 3, 2013 after a number of bloody clashes between the supporters and opponents of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, Defence Minister of Egypt Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi announced that the army dismisses the president.

Commenting on this Mikhail Margelov marked: “It goes without saying, that we stand for the political processes in Egypt to develop in the legitimate political way, and for us the President of Egypt, Mohamed Morsi, is legitimately elected president. We cooperated with him and hopefully will continue the cooperation. At the same time we understand the mood, which is expressed by a large part of the Egyptian society. Also we do understand this feeling of responsibility that the military of Egypt have for the fate of their country”.

In course of his speech Mikhail Margelov also commented the situation in Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, Sudan and Syria and presented his vision of the prospective for the situation in the Middle East.
