PIR Center Summer School: Summing Up

MOSCOW, AUGUST 5, 2013. PIR PRESS – Summer School of PIR Center provides a unique opportunity to meet Russian experts on all the key issues of international security. I was absolutely amazed with how many well-known and professional experts and politicians found time to meet and talk with us. In general, the acquired contacts, the level of discussion, the intensity of the communication and the organization of our free time can be assessed as ‘excellent’. 00000On July 13, 2013 PIR Center International Summer School on Global Security ended. A day before, on July 12, passed the last day of classes which was marked with the lecture and Army general (retired), Board Member of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vyacheslav Trubnikov (nonproliferation and security in the South Asia). In the second half of the day Senior Nuclear Security Officer of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security of IAEA, PIR Center Advisory Board member Alexey Ubeev and PIR Center Research Fellows Andrey Baklitsky and Alexander Cheban carried out the modeling dedicated to nuclear security challenges in the Middle East, Central and Southern Asia.

00000In the evening Summer School graduation ceremony took place. The participants had to gain not less than 74 from overall 184 points to complete the course. This year all School participants fulfilled this requirement and received their certificates.

Following the Summer School results the biggest number of points were earned by Alyona Makhukova, National Research Nuclear University alumni, and Olga Skorokhodova, visiting PhD student of Yale University. Andrey Shadursky (St. Petersburg State University), Natalia Shapiro (Lomonosov Moscow State University) and Maria Roskoshnaya (Federal Service for Technical and Export Control) joined the ranks of best students.

"The knowledge gained at the Summer School will help me deepen my scientific and working skills. Research and education component of the program of the Summer School was above my highest expectations. I want to mention the high level of experts and well-prepared administrative part of the school”, – noted the Summer School 2013 participant Semen Kukol, Research Fellow of Russian Institute for Strategic Studies Center for Near Abroad Research.

This year PIR Center Summer School brought together 24 young specialists from diplomatic and government agencies, research centers and think-tanks of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and the Czech Republic. For the past two weeks they took part in 44 lectures, round tables and seminars, listened to 35 lecturers and participated in discussions with them.

00000All participants highly appreciated the program of activities, the list of lecturers and the throw selection of the listeners. During the Summer School participants showed good results in traditional educational activities such as lectures, round tables and seminars, as well as in experimental formats – foresight and scenario modeling (the last one was introduced to the educational program in 2013 for the first time).

On their part, Summers School lecturers have also highly evaluated the participant’s competence and their motivation to receive new knowledge in the global security field.

The following Russian and foreign institutions acted as partners of the PIR Center Summer School: Russkiy Mir Foundation, NATO Information Office in Moscow, Carnegie Corporation of New York, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, The Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, Macarthur Foundation, The Nuclear Threat Initiative, Internet Support Foundation.

During two weeks the School participants also visited the Abramtsevo estate-museum, had the opportunity to see the cabinet-museum of the Minister of Defence of the Soviet Union, Marshal Georgy Zhukov and Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius.

In general, during the Summer School the participant had intense training in the field of global security problems, experienced diversity and beauty of the Russian culture, and received a lot of positive emotions.
