PIR Center's web-portal on the nonproliferation and disarmament education

MOSCOW, MAY 15, 2014. PIR PRESS – «In May of 2010, Russia was the only nuclear-weapon state to sign the Joint Statement on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education presented at the Meeting of Main Committee I of the 2010 NPT Review Conference. Since that time Russian universities and nongovernmental organizations have done a wonderful job, and we will be proud to present it in 2015», – PIR Center Executive Director Albert Zulkharneev.

PIR Center presented a web-portal devoted to the nonproliferation, arms control, and nuclear security education at the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2015 NPT Review Conference. The portal is located at PIR Center website and can be accessed at npt-edu.eng.pircenter.org. The visitors are able to find the key documents on the issue, information about educational activities of Commonwealth of Independent States, special PIR Center report on implementation of Action 22 of the NPT Review Conference 2010 Action Plan by the Russian Federation.

The nonproliferation, arms control, and nuclear security education is an important part of global non-proliferation efforts. The importance of the education was highlighted by the United Nations study on disarmament and non-proliferation education and the Secretary General report of 2002. Within the NPT Review process all the members states are encouraged to «to implement the recommendations contained in the report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations» under the Action 22 of the NPT Review Conference 2010 Action Plan.

At the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2015 NPT Review Conference a Joint statement on disarmament and non-proliferation education was presented on behalf of 36 Member States of the NPT. The statement confirmed that «disarmament and non-proliferation education should be carried out in an inclusive and collaborative way with all relevant actors.  It should also take place in all States and regions. The 2002 report from the Secretary-General stressed the importance of partnerships among governments and international, regional, and civil society organizations».   

PIR Center considers its Education and Training Program as one of the key priorities.
