Vladimir Voronkov is officially starting his work as the head of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office

MOSCOW, SEPTEMBER 14, 2017, PIR-PRESS — “We are talking about more effective help to UN member-states in countering terrorism when such requests appear. It is necessary to make bureau’s work more visible and corresponding to the expectations of the international society. New unit will among other things contribute to the formation of the international law in the sphere of countering international terrorism” — Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, member of the PIR Center Advisory Board.

Vladimir Voronkov is officially starting his work as the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and the head of the new United Nations structure — Counter-Terrorism Office. PIR Center congratulates Dr. Voronkov with this new, high appointment. Vladimir Voronkov is a top-class professional, and PIR Center is proud of our longstanding cooperation and firm friendship.

In his interview to the news agency Rossiya Segodnya Vladimir Voronkov explained what kind of tasks he sees standing before the new office: “We are talking about more effective help to UN member-states in countering terrorism when such requests appear. It is necessary to make bureau’s work more visible and corresponding to the expectations of the international society. New unit will among other things contribute to the formation of the international law in the sphere of countering international terrorism. Concerning the military component — UN does not have it in this direction”.

Vladimir Voronkov graduated Moscow State University in 1975. He holds PhD in history. Beginning his career at the Foreign Ministry in 1989, he served in various capacities in the central office and abroad. In 2000-2002 — Minister Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission at his country’s Embassy in Poland. In 2002-2005 — Deputy Director of the Personnel Department. In 2005-2008 — Deputy Permanent Representative to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna. In 2008-2011 Vladimir Voronkov was Director of the Department of European Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russian Federation. This period witnessed an active phase of cooperation between Russia and the West. The program “Partnership for Modernization” was launched together with the European Union, after a long brake NATO-Russia Council resumed its operation, Dr. Voronkov was directly involved in the preparation and presentation of the draft of the European Security Treaty. Last six years Vladimir Voronkov has been the Russian Federation’s Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna. He holds a diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. Vladimir Voronkov is a member of PIR Center Advisory Board since 2009.

In the interview to PIR Center’s project Open Collar Dr. Voronkov said: “My credo is very simple — to learn, to learn, and to learn. To try and master new spheres and directions of the diplomatic profession. Not staying longer than necessary in one place, so that you will not have the urge to yawn. Broadly speaking – do not grow rusty. Only in such way you can have a feeling of the full life and belonging to what happens around, and buoyancy”. We are sure that the new appointment will fulfill Dr. Voronkov’s credo!
