Prof. YURI E. FEDOROV

Prof. Fedorov Yury


Prof. Fedorov is a well-known expert on international security, arms control and political decision-making. His name and numerous publications on strategic offensive weapons, tactical nuclear arms, missile defense, early warning systems are known in Russia and abroad, especially in Europe. For two years Prof. Fedorov was Russian editor and author of a number of chapters pertaining to Russia in annual UNDP Human Development Reports. He is coeditor and author of several chapters in three books prepared within the framework of the project by the Swedish National Defense College. The books deal with Russian-NATO relations, impact of recent elections on US foreign policy and Russia-Europe relations. Some of his publications touch upon the energy security issues, including the Caspian region. Yuri Fedorov worked in the King's College London, doing research and training within the Program on Post-Communist Security Studies.

Dr. (History) Yuri Fedorov graduated from the Physical Faculty of the Moscow State University. He then worked in the Institute of the Sociological Studies of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. He was head of section in the Department of Disarmament Studies of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations. He also worked in the International Department of the Central Committee of the CPSU and in 1991 became Deputy Chair of the Department of Political Science in the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). Since September 1998 he headed section and since December 2000 was director of the Strategic Studies Department in the Institute for US and Canada Studies. Since 1997 he has been member of the PIR Executive Board.

His teaching activities took place mostly in the MGIMO. He is Professor of the Department of Comparative Political Science in the MGIMO. In the PIR Center Prof. Fedorov actively participated in educational and training programs.

Among research projects to be coordinated by Prof. Fedorov are "Nuclear Arms Control: Russia and Other Nuclear-Weapon States", "Prospects for Sub-Strategic Nuclear Weapons", "Strategic Triangles in East Asia".
