Media Briefing: WMD in the Middle East after Iranian Elections

17.06.2013

MOSCOW, JUNE 17, 2013. PIR PRESS – «Iranians believe that their most important neighbor is the United States, represented by the Fifth Fleet and US military bases, not to mention the troops in Afghanistan or UAV’s in Pakistan. This means that for Teheran the solution to its foreign security challenges is deeply connected to the relations with Washington», - PIR Center President Vladimir Orlov.

On June 18, 2013 at 14:00 PIR Center will hold a media briefing on “Middle East after Iranian presidential elections. Nuclear and chemical weapons’ issues” at the RIA-Novosti press center in Moscow.

The victory of Hassan Rouhani, a moderated candidate who served as a chief nuclear negotiator from 2003 to 2005, in the Iranian presidential elections adds a new angle to the situation around Teheran’s nuclear program. During his two years as the chief negotiator, Rouhani presented himself as a pragmatic diplomat willing to engage in fair negotiations on nuclear issues.

According to PIR Center President Vladimir Orlov, the relations that the new president will maintain with the West will be worth watching: «Iranians believe that their most important neighbor is the United States, represented by the Fifth Fleet and US military bases, not to mention the troops in Afghanistan or UAV’s in Pakistan. This means that for Teheran the solution to his foreign security challenges is deeply connected to the relations with Washington».

US and Iranian interests also intersect in Syria where the issue of chemical weapons gains importance day by day.

At the same time it is obvious that the problems connected the weapons of mass destructions cannot be solved without the active participation of all of the countries of the region. The lack of cooperation among key Middle Eastern states led to the more than half-year-long deadlock in the process of the creation of a Weapons of Mass Destruction-Free Zone in the Middle East.

Those and similar issues will be discussed during the press briefing on June 18.

The briefing will take place at the Glass Hall of the RIA Novosti International Multimedia Press Center located at Zubovskiy boulevard 4, Moscow, Russia. The accreditation is available by phone +7 (495) 645-6472 or e-mail [email protected]. Accreditation closes one hour before the event.
