The conclusion of PIR Center and MGIMO University Joint Module on Nonproliferation

MOSCOW, NOVEMBER 9, 2015. PIR PRESS  “The WMD and Nonproliferation class organized and delivered by PIR Center in partnership with the MGIMO University was and exceptional educational experience. The well-organized and rich course outline along with very educative and exclusive reading materials supplied made this course a very productive one. It was a magnificent and unique experience to receive lectures from some of the top experts in the field of non-proliferation,” — Umut Aslan, student of “Governance and Global Affairs” M.A. in International Affairs at the MGIMO University.

The third PIR Center and MGIMO University Joint Module “WMD Nonproliferation and International Security” completed successfully. The two-month course consisted of eleven lectures; one lesson was given to debate.

Students attended the lectures by Assistant Professor of the Department of International Relations and Russian Foreign Policy of the MGIMO University Ildar Akhtamzyan, PIR Center Special Advisor Vladimir Orlov, Chairman of the Executive Board of PIR Center Gen. Evgeny Buzhinskiy, Member of the PIR Center’s Executive Board Gen. Vyacheslav Trubnikov, member of PIR Center Advisory Board Aleksey Ubeev, Head of the Foreign Desk at Kommersant newspaper Elena Chernenko.

More than 20 students from Argentina, Germany, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Thailand, Turkey and USA attended the lessons.

The main purpose of the course was developing of better understanding of the main WMD threats, risks of nuclear energy development and WMD nonproliferation regimes functioning.

The module generated lively responses from students. “The WMD and Non-Proliferation class organized and delivered by PIR Center in partnership with the MGIMO University was and exceptional educational experience. The well organized and rich course outline along with very educative and exclusive reading materials supplied made this course a very productive one. Another impressive issue was the variety and quality of the various professors delivering the course. It was a magnificent and unique experience to receive lectures from some of the top experts in the field of non-proliferation. In May 2014, PIR Center, MGIMO University and Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey presented the initiative on the Dual-Degree Master’s Program in Nonproliferation Studies at seminar “Action 22: Disarmament and Nonproliferation Education A Tool for Advancement of the NPT”. The seminar was held at the UN headquarters in New York on the sidelines of the 2015 NPT Review Conference and was attended by the international organizations, diplomatic community, think tanks and NGOs representatives. This master’s program can be a breakthrough in disarmament and nonproliferation education and the future security dialogue.
